Since I am a Mennonite myself and have spent a lot of time in Amish areas of the USA such as Amish Country, Ohio – I like to try and answer a few frequently asked questions. That said – every answer will essentially be “mostly” – the Amish are not centralized, meaning every Bishop of every neighborhood has slightly different rules, which is part of why the clothing you see is both recognizable and a little bit different! So please take everything I say with a grain of salt because the community you are visiting might be a little bit different.
For instance – in Indiana I definitely know some Amish young people that use Instagram and the Amish are often more relaxed about having their photograph taken. Whereas in Wisconsin in the community I visit the most there is absolutely no photography allowed, it’s very strict.
If you are wondering about something – like taking a photograph, or why the Amish do x y or z – it’s ok to just ask! The Amish are not an evangelical religious group, meaning they aren’t ever going to advertise their faith or lifestyle, but in my experience are almost always very happy to answer polite and genuine questions.

- Can I visit Amish church services? Sadly, you can’t attend Amish church services. The Old Order Amish worship in small groups within family homes, and their services are not open to non-Amish individuals. These services are often conducted in a form of German known as “Pennsylvania Dutch.” If you’re genuinely seeking a spiritual path and not just visiting as a tourist, there are less conservative plain groups like the Conservative Mennonites or Beachy Amish who welcome genuine seekers.
- What’s the difference between the Amish and the Mennonites? All Amish are Mennonites, but not all Mennonites are Amish. Anabaptists, which include Mennonites and Amish, are a branch of Christianity distinct from Catholic, Protestant, and Orthodox groups. Anabaptists believe in adult baptism as a true commitment to faith.
